CLEAR THE BOARD. This colloquial phrase implies that the fast-moving discs of clearing the board may pose a danger to "women and children" standing by the courts.

BUMP UP.

Bump a scoring disc onto or touching a line such that it is no longer scoring. Syn: SPOIL.

(of a shot) Intended to move a disc into the 10-Off. || The term Kitchen is borrowed from American billiards, for which it means the end quarter of the billiards table where the break shots are taken. The term is thought to derive from the 1800s in the U.S., when homes often were not large enough to house a billiards table in its own room. The solution was a billiards table with a cover to convert it to a dining room table. To accommodate the space needed for shooting billiards, the table was oriented in the dining room such that the player would stand partially or wholly through the doorway to the adjoining kitchen when shooting from the break-shot end, hence "in the kitchen". Pickleball has borrowed the term "kitchen" from shuffleboard, referring to the non-volley zone (NVZ), a 7-foot area on each side of the net where players are not allowed to volley the ball (hit it before it bounces).

A disc purposefully shot by a player into an open position on the board, usually scoring, to tempt the opponent to try to kitchen it. The shooter hopes that the opponent's cue disc will miss the target and stop in the kitchen, glance off the target and stop in the kitchen, or stick on the board in the open where it can be kitchened by the player's next shot.
